About Bad Apple
Give me a basic rundown of how the service works.
Every week, we reach out to farmers and purchase produce at risk of going to waste because of 1) excess supply or 2) cosmetic “imperfections” that don’t impact the taste, nutritional content, or shelf life. We provide you with a menu of options and you pick the produce items you want. We box up your choices and deliver them to your doorstep at a discount to grocery store prices. You can skip deliveries whenever you want. It’s as simple as that!
What do you do with produce that doesn’t make it into boxes?
Our driving mission is to fight food waste and hunger. In line with our values, we donate all excess produce to our community partners, a combination of hunger relief organizations, food pantries, and education non-profits.
Can I skip deliveries? (Short answer: Yes!)
You can cancel boxes any time before a preset cutoff 4 days before your delivery at 3PM. To skip a delivery, go to My Account // Upcoming Deliveries. Find the line item that pertains to your next delivery, and click “Skip Delivery” in the “More Options” column. You can also add a vacation into the system by going to My Account // Delivery Hold, putting in start and end dates, and selecting “Add Vacation.” If you realize that you’re going to be out of town after the cancellation cutoff, contact our customer service team at email@example.com. We will arrange to have your box donated to one of our community partners!
How do I cancel my subscription?
We hate to see you go, but if you decide that Bad Apple isn’t for you, cancelling your subscription is simple. Go to My Account // Recurring Items, click the “Remove All” button, and click “Ok” on the resulting pop up. If you decide you’d like to re-subscribe, log onto your account, add another box to your shopping cart, and check out.
Can I customize what I get in my box? (Short answer: Of course!)
We offer two products: a You Pick! and a Trust Us! Produce box subscription. Like its name suggests, the You Pick! Box is fully customizable week to week. To adjust the components of your box, go to My Account // Upcoming Deliveries, then click the “Customize Bag” button underneath the line pertaining to your next delivery. Use the plus and minus buttons to set the amount of each item you want, and save your preferences. Remember: you can customize your order up until 4 days before your delivery at 3PM. If you don’t customize your order by the cutoff, we will default the contents of your box to the items in the previous order that you received, minus any items that we no longer have included in our weekly availability. We recommend that You Pick! subscribers customize their box before every scheduled delivery as our availability may change slightly week to week. You can reach out to us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you need to make any changes to your order after the deadline, and we will work with you to best accommodate your needs given what we have available in inventory!
Can I customize the Trust Us! Produce Box?
At this time, we're not able to make substitutions or changes to the Trust Us! Produce Box. If you have allergies or want more say on the fruits and veggies we send you, we recommend the You Pick! Produce Box, which is fully customizable.
Where do you deliver?
Currently, Bad Apple serves every zip code in Manhattan except: 10014, 10004, 10005, 10006, 10007, 10038, and 10280. We also deliver to some zip codes in Brooklyn bordering Prospect Park: 11216, 11217, 11215, and 11238 . If you’re dying to get your hands on our produce, but are outside of the delivery range, join our wait-list! We’ll shoot you an email when we expand to your area. Tip: share our wait-list with your neighbors. The more interest we get in a zip code, the faster we’ll come to you!
When do you deliver?
We assign you a window depending on your zip code, which you'll receive in a confirmation email post check-out. We follow this schedule in order to reduce the amount of gasoline we burn on the delivery route (we’re an environmentally conscious organization after all!).
I’m not home during my delivery window, is this an issue? (Short answer: No!)
Not home during your delivery window? Not a problem! Just update your delivery notes when you check out to include detailed instructions on where to drop off your box.
I don't see a registration or delivery notification in my inbox. What's up?
In the event that you aren't getting confirmation emails from us, double check your Spam / Junk folder. If this doesn't resolve the issue, contact us at email@example.com and we'll get things sorted out for you.
Can I make a one time purchase?
All of our products are subscription based, but in the event that you're only in town for a week, or need our produce for a special occasion, placing a one time order is simple. All you need to do is add a product to your basket using the standard checkout process, and wait until after the cutoff to modify or cancel an order. Then, go to My Account // Recurring Items, click the “Remove All” button, and click “Ok” on the resulting pop up. This effectively cancels all future deliveries.
Exactly what kind of produce do you sell? Is it less nutritious or tasty than conventional produce?
Our produce tastes the same as standard produce. The items may be a different size, shape, or color than what’s sold in conventional markets, or have some scarring on the peel that doesn’t impact the quality. We never source produce that is bruised, rotting, or only lasts a day in the fridge. If you ever receive any items like this, contact our customer service team at firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll give you a refund.
Is your produce organic?
We focus on reducing food waste, so not all of the produce we source is organic. In fact, because the certification exam is so expensive, a lot of smaller scale growers can’t afford to get certified, even though they may use organic growing practices. We are continually working to flesh out our organic supply and hope to offer an all organic box soon.
Is your produce local?
Much of the produce we offer is from New York and bordering states. When it starts to get cold in the Northeast, we cast a wider net to ensure that you have a broad selection of items year round. We care deeply about supporting local growers and are in the process of developing all local subscription option.
